Change is hard, and yet it is a natural and constant part of life. Whether we are moving through life transitions or challenges, desire personal growth, or are embarking on a new journey, understanding the stages of change can empower us to navigate the process with greater clarity and resilience. 

Let’s explore 6 stages of change to shed light on the transformative journey and provide insights to help you embrace change with open arms (or at least not resist it)!

1. Pre-contemplation:

The first stage of change is pre-contemplation, here we may not yet recognize the need for change or feel ambivalent about it. There is often a lack of awareness or denial of the problem or desired change. It is essential to approach this stage with empathy and patience, gently raising your awareness and fostering a sense of readiness for the next stage. 

2. Contemplation:

In the contemplation stage, we become aware of the need for change and start considering our options. We weigh the pros and cons, gather information, and reflect on the potential impact of change. This is a crucial stage for self-reflection and exploration and is an EXCELLENT time to seek guidance, gather resources, and envision the possibilities that lie ahead.

3. Preparation:

During the preparation stage, we actively plan for change. Here we set goals, develop strategies, and take concrete steps toward implementing change. This stage involves seeking support, acquiring necessary skills or knowledge, and addressing potential barriers. Preparation paves the way for a successful transition and increases confidence in the change process.

4. Action:

The action stage marks the initiation of change, this is where we take definitive steps towards our goals. We implement our plans, make behavioral changes, and actively engage in new patterns of thinking and acting. This stage requires commitment, perseverance, and ongoing support to navigate challenges and sustain progress. It is essential to celebrate achievements and acknowledge the effort and dedication throughout this stage.

5. Maintenance:

Once we have successfully made changes, the maintenance stage begins. It involves the ongoing practice and reinforcement of new behaviors, thoughts, and habits. During this stage, we consolidate our progress, learn from setbacks, and build resilience to sustain change. Continuous self-reflection, support systems, and self-care are vital in maintaining positive change over the long term.

6. Relapse and Renewal:

Yes, you read that correctly. Change is not always linear, and relapses or setbacks are common. Relapse should be seen as an opportunity for renewal rather than a failure. We may cycle through previous stages, reevaluate goals, revisit motivations, and adjust strategies. It is important to maintain self-compassion, learn from setbacks, and utilize the knowledge gained to strengthen the commitment to change.

The stages of change provide a roadmap for personal growth, transformation, and navigating life’s challenges. Understanding these stages allows us to recognize where we are on our journey, make informed decisions, and access the support we need.
